Why My Parents Have So Much Stuff

I was helping my mother this weekend go through her house to get ready for a yard sale and get some stuff on eBay and CraigsList. A lot of the stuff belonged to my grandparents that we inherited through gifts or from their passing away. My mother and I were amazed each time we’d pull tape, a box of kleenex, glue, etc. from a box my grandmother had packed. What was she thinking? Like we don’t have glue, kleenex, or tape at home or can’t get it from the store? My mom even admitted that to a degree, her and my father were pack rats for many years, until she decided enough was enough. Why store something if you’re never going to use it again?

That got me to thinking. Why do people store things that they’ll never use again? It seemed to me that it was a specific habit that started with my grandparents. My parents probably just learned it from them. So again, why? I figured that it had something to do with living through The Great Depression which all of my grandparents had the pleasure of experiencing. The mindset I think was that since goods cost money, one might as well keep everything because they could find one day that they need something and either don’t want to pay for it again or can’t afford it.

My mother just decided she didn’t want clutter anymore (why pay to move a bunch of stuff you don’t want?). I finally saw the light where I just can’t store the stuff. So, we started getting ready for a yard sale and putting things on eBay and Craigs List. What we can’t sell we’ll try to donate. Anything left over will just get tossed out. Mom figures its unfair to leave my brother and I to sift through decades of stuff after she passes away. Why not do it now when we have some small idea of what’s what.

Spring Cleaning Sale

I figured since I had the post about selling the windsurfers for my mother, I’d post about a bunch of other stuff we’re trying to sell on craigslist and ebay. Cross promotion never hurt anyone, so take a look!

Windsurfers for Sale

I’m helping my mom clear our her house of stuff she no longer uses or we kids can’t use anymore (or just don’t want for that matter). To that end, I’m helping her sell two Windsurfer rigs that my Dad and I used when I was a kid. I hate to see them go, but I just don’t have time (or any open water around) to get back into it.

You can check out the ad here as well as some pictures of the windsurfers themselves. I can always take more pictures if someone is really interested in making a purchase.

Stardust Hotel

Just having come back from Vegas, I knew that the Stardust hotel would be imploded in the next few weeks. It will make way for a new $4.4 billion hotel/resort to come by 2010. Well, they finally did it last night with a bit of fanfare:

Mega Millions – $355 million

$355 million dollars. Wow, that’s a lot of cash. If you won the jackpot, I think you’d get somewhere around $140 million (before you pay Uncle Sam). Not bad. The odds of you winning the whole thing are 1:175,711,536, that is if nobody else wins the jackpot. You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning.

I normally don’t play the lottery, but $355 million is a lot of cake, so I’ll take my chances. For my 10 “Quick Picks”, I have a 1:4 chance of winning $1 and 1:17,571,153.6 of winning the whole shebang. Wish me luck!
